Biruk Kebede reads his poem Imagine Kindness followed by an English translation
As part of this week’s Coventry Welcomes festival, we’ve been working with Ethiopian poet Biruk Kebede, who has written an original poem in honour of the occasion.
Titled Imagine Kindness, the poem has been written in Biruk’s native Amharic, and translated into English with help from Theatre Practitioner Kim Hackleman. In the video below, you can hear Biruk reading his poem in the original language, followed by the English translation, red by Lew Hackleman.

ደግነትን ያስቡ / Imagine Kindness
ደግነትን ሳስብ ሳሰላስል ከልብ
ተሰማኝ በጥልቀት የሰው ህይወት ሲያብብ
በቅፅበት ቃኘሁት የውበትን ድባብ
ደስታዬም ተስፋዬም ሆነ እጥፍ ድርብ
አዲስ ምዕራፍ ታየኝ በምናቤ ጎልቶ
ፍቅር እና ደግነት በምድር ተስፋፍቶ
የሰው ልጅ አንድ ሆኖ መከፋፈል ጠፍቶ
የሌላውን ችግር እንደ እራሱ አይቶ
ሁሉም ሲረዳዳ ሲቀበል እንግዳ
ነጭ ጥቁር ሳይል እምነት ሳይለይ ባህል
የልዩነት ገደል ሃብታሙን ከድሃው አራርቆ የሚከፍል
ሲጠብብ ሲደፈን የሰው ዘር አንድ ሲሆን
ፍትህ እንደ ወረርሽኝ ምድሪቷን ሲሸፍን
ግፍ ጠፍቶ በይፋ ፍቅር ሲያሸንፈን
እያንዳንዱም ሲሆን ለሌላው መድህን
ጆሮአችን ሲከፈት ለምስኪኑ ጩኸት
ሲጠፋ ጦርነት ለንዋይ መራኮት
መገዳደል ሲቀር ለአንዲት ኩርማን ምድር
ስንኖር በፍቅር ማንም ከሞት ላይቀር
ጥላቻ አጥቶ ስፍራ ብቻውን ሲያወራ
ዓይናችን ሲበራ ልባችን ሲራራ
የሰው ልጅ እንግልት ሲሰማን በጥልቀት
ልክ እንደራስ ስቃይ ውስጣችን ሲቃትት
ፈጥነን ስንደርስለት ደሃውን ለመርዳት
እራስ ወዳድነት እኔነት ሲተካ በሰው ልጅ እኛነት
ያ ነው ህይወት ማለት መንግስተ ሰማያት
በቅድሚያ ስንራራ ለራሳችን ከልብ
መናደድ ስናቆም በሰበባ ሰበብ
ማብጠልጠል እራስን በከንቱ አላግባብ
ከራስ ጋር መጋጨት በህሊና ፀፀት
ሲቀር መበሳጨት እብደት ፀጉር መንጨት
ማዋከብ እራስን ልክ እንደ ባላንጣ
ጨልሞ ህሊና ምን መልካም ሊመጣ?
ተፈጥሮ ለግሳን ሁሉን በቸርነት
ምድሪቷ ሳትጠብበን ተሰጥታን በስፋት
ህሊና አግቶን ማስተዋል ተስኖን እንዲያው መገፋፋት
ያከትማል ከእንግዲህ ከተሳሰብን በእውነት
ህሊናችን ነቅቶ ደግ ደጉን ሲያስብ
ደግነት ሲያሸንፍ ክፋት ሴራው ሲከሽፍ
ይታየኛል ያኔ የሰው ህይወት ሲያብብ
በህብረ ቀለማት በልዩነት ሲዋብ
ደግነት ከሃሳብ ሲጀምር ልክ እንደምርጥ ዘር ልብ ላይ ተዘርቶ ሥር ሰድዶ ሲበቅል
አንደበት ሲያወጣ በጎ የቀና ቃል
ትንሽ መልካም ድርጊት በዛ ላይ ሲታከል
የአንዱን ሸክም አንዱ አግዞ ሲያቃልል
ማደሪያ ያጣውን ሲያስጠጋ ሲጠልል
ሁሉም ሲረባረብ ለማህበረሰብ
ይህወት ሲያገኝ ለዛ ደስታችን ሲበዛ
የርህራሄ ልብ ሲገኝ በሁላችን
ስለትን መጨበጥ ሲያቅተው እጃችን
ወንጀል አይሰማ በየከተማችን
ለእንስሳት ለአዕዋፋት ለእፅዋቱ ሁላ
የሰው ልጅ ጋ አለ የሚበቃ መላ
የምድሪቷን አፈር አየሩን ውሃውን
ሁሉ ሲንከባከብ ለትውልድም ሲያስብ
የሰው ልጅ ሰው ሲሆን አድጎ ሲጎለምስ
ታየኝ በምናቤ ድንቅ የህይወት ድግስ
ይህ እንግዳ ጊዜ ዛሬ ያለንበት
በማይታይ ጠላት የተወረርንበት
ወደን ሳይሆን በግድ የተራራቅንበት
ሰው ወዳጅ ዘመዱን ቤተሰቡን ሳይቀር
ጭራሽ ያልቻለበት አስታምሞ እንኳን መቅበር
የኮሮና ቫይረስ ለዓይን የደቀቀ
ሲገድል ሺዎችን ከእኛ እየነጠቀ
የየአገሩን ሕዝብ እያሸማቀቀ
ሲያጠቃ ሁሉንም ቋንቋ ሳይለይ ቀለም
ድንበር የለሽ ሆኖ ሲሰራጭ በዓለም
ካስተዋልን በእውነት አለው ጥልቅ ምስጢር
ዝቅ ማለት ከቻልን ከፈቀድን መማር
እንዲሻል ደግነት ብልጫ እንድዳለው ፍቅር
ሊያስተምረን መጥቷል እኛን ሊያስተሳስር
ዘግተን ቤታችንን ይህ ወረርሽኝ እስኪያልፍ
ይከፈት ልባችን ፍቅር እንዲያሸንፍ
በአካል ብቻ ይሁን ማህበራዊ ርቀት
ስሜት መንፈፈሳችን ይታሰር በአንድነት

Imagine Kindness

When I imagined kindness and meditated on it;
The flourishing of humanity
Overwhelmed me with joy and hope.
I saw a new paradigm in my imagination:
Love spreading around the world,
The human race as one.
I saw kind hearts helping kind hearts,
Regardless of difference, without discrimination,
All dividing gaps narrowed, filled and levelled.
I saw justice spreading over all the world like a pandemic.
When we are conquered by love and bring salvation to others,
When we enable our ears to hear the crying of the poor,
When we open our eyes to the pain and suffering in the world,
When there is no more war,
When there is no more killing,
When there is no more room for hatred,
When “we” replaces “I” and
We live together in love and harmony,
Then life will birth its meaning.
We must have compassion for ourselves.
We must be free from guilt.
For if our inner world is dark, how can we bring light to the world?
When kindness grows from our thoughts
And roots deeply in our hearts,
We will express it with kind words, followed by kind deeds.
An invisible enemy in this strange time
Gives us no choice but to distance,
Unable to tend our loved ones in sickness and in death.
Too tiny for the eye, this virus
Is taking thousands of lives, infiltrating country, after country, after country…
And no border can stop its spread.
But if we humble ourselves, it has a lesson to teach us:
That kindness matters and
Caring for each other brings us close together.
Let us open our hearts to love,
Let distancing be only physical,
And let us bind our spirits into one.
