Local Youngsters Swap School for the Stage this July at the Belgrade Theatre

Posted on 27 June 2014

Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre is offering local youngsters aged between eight and sixteen the chance to develop and share their theatre skills at its annual Summer School, which aims to entertain and educate kids during the summer holidays.

Now in its fourth successful year, the Belgrade will be running two week-long Summer Schools this year. Week one will run at the theatre from 10am to 4.30pm from Mon 21 July to Fri 25 July, followed by week two from Mon 4 Aug to Fri 8 Aug from 10am to 4.30pm.

Each week will include a series of different workshops and rehearsals in which the young people will explore movement, voice and acting techniques with professional theatre practitioners from the Belgrade Theatre. The group will work together to devise their own piece of theatre, which they will perform in front of family and friends at the end of the week.

“Summer School was really good for my confidence and helped me to make new friends.” Summer School participant 2013

Claire Simpson, General Manager (C & E) said: “Following the success of previous years, we are delighted to once again deliver our annual Summer School programme to young people from across Coventry and Warwickshire. Summer school gives young people a positive opportunity to make new friends and develop new skills during the summer holiday period. The young people have a fun and jam packed week creating a short piece of drama they can share with family and friends. No previous experience is necessary in order to take part in these activities, just plenty of enthusiasm’.

The cost to take part in the Belgrade Theatre’s Summer School is £120 per child, per week if booked online and £130 per child if booked by phone or in person. A 25% discount is available on second and subsequent tickets when two or more tickets are purchased for the same family. Each week will be led by different practitioners so it is possible for children to attend both, or just one.

Early drop off (from 8.45am) and late pick up (until 5.15pm) is available at an additional cost of £20.00 per child.

Notes to editors:

The Belgrade Theatre Community & Education Company (C & E) runs a range of community arts activities both at the theatre and in venues across the city. Its work is based on the premise that drama is a powerful tool for the building of creative, confident individuals, and communities with a strong sense of local identity. As such, the work can make a powerful contribution to the city’s regeneration agenda.

The community programme is central to the theatre’s work in the city raising levels of access and participation, particularly targeting disadvantaged or under-represented groups. Workshop programmes are run in venues across the city, community performances are taken out into community venues, and a targeted programme of work looks to engage the city’s marginalised communities, forming new partnerships to push forward new ways of working. The company strives to achieve artistic excellence in all areas of its work.

The C&E Company has built a profile for high quality and challenging community productions including the Belgrade’s first festival of community theatre In Our Own Words. The Acting Out programme, run in partnership with the Education Department of the Local Authority, has twice been cited as a model of good practice in Government White Papers on 14-19 Education, Training and Skills. T2014 marks the 16th anniversary of Big School, a TiE project touring 40 schools each year exploring the transition from primary to secondary school.

In 1965, the Belgrade formed the first ever Theatre in Education (TiE) company, a company dedicated to using theatrical performance and drama workshops to explore issues of cultural, social, political and moral significance as part of a free service to schools and the young people of Coventry. The Belgrade will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of its dedicated TiE company in 2015.

Organisations or individuals wishing to support the work of the Community & Education Company should call 024 7684 6741 or email communityadmin@belgrade.co.uk.
