The Belgrade brings creative workshops to University Hospital

Posted on 13 April 2012

A series of creative storytelling workshops have been held for Renal dialysis patients at University Hospital, Coventry. The project has been managed by Antonia Beck from the Belgrade with support worker Jackie Webb from Age UK who have spent time with patients as part of a larger arts and health project being carried out across the city. The Creative Gymnasium project aims to provide opportunities to develop new skills and improve health and well-being, by delving into the art of storytelling, story making and reminiscence theatre.

Antonia explains “Over three weeks, we have explored a range of storytelling techniques with patients in the Renal ward. We have used memories, famous stories and objects as a stimulus, and have created several new stories as group.”

Patient Derek Yates said “I’ve really enjoyed each workshop, Dialysis is a long treatment and it’s nice to pass the time by taking part in something like this. We have to think on our feet to form new plots and characters, mine are ideas which come from my childhood up in Yorkshire.”

Justine Themen is the Associate Director of the Belgrade Theatre: “The Creative Gymnasium project is all about getting everyone involved. We wanted to reach out and explore its potential within a hospital, somewhere we wouldn’t normally go.”

Antonia Beck is also running a project with people aged 50+, as part of the Creative Gymnasium, which is working with Coventry’s older generations to create a piece of devised theatre celebrating the memories, rituals, hopes and heritage of the elders in our city. The show entitled Shine On will be staged at the Belgrade from 28 – 30 June and will be free to attend but you will be asked to make a donation.
