Back to the floor for National Apprenticeship Week
To celebrate this week being National Apprenticeship Week, Sara Holyhead, Employer Services Director for the National Apprenticeship Service in the West Midlands, joined us to experience a day in the life of a Belgrade Apprentice in various departments of the theatre.
The Belgrade Theatre has an award-winning apprenticeship scheme which was named Creative Apprentice Employer of the Year by the National Skills Academy last year and featured in the Guardian’s Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list. General Manager, Janthi Mills, was also nominated as Theatre Manager of the Year at this year’s Theatre Awards UK for her role in creating the programme.
The scheme employs apprentices in various departments of the theatre including customer services, marketing, sound, theatre operations, wardrobe, lighting and community arts. It provides hands on experience of working in the creative industry whilst bridging the gap between school and the world of work.
This week, employers and training providers all over the country will go ‘back to the floor’ in celebration of National Apprenticeship week and to discover the benefits of apprenticeship schemes. Sara Holyhead visited the theatre for a day, meeting Belgrade apprentices Beth Brogden (Wardrobe), Dave Barrett (Operations), Joanna Ryan (Community) and Tom Carter (Sound).
Sara’s day began by meeting and greeting the apprentices before going on to shadow them in their day to day tasks, giving her an insight into the innerworkings of the theatre and an experience of what it’s like to be in their shoes. Click on the images & video gallery to see photos from the day.
