Knitters Needed! Crafty Coventrians sought for relaxed panto performance

Posted on 24 October 2018

Following the huge success of our first ever relaxed panto performance in January, we’re now on the look-out for keen knitters to lend their skills ahead of their relaxed performance of Sleeping Beauty.

Specially adapted to provide an opening and welcoming environment for all, relaxed performances are aimed at those who prefer a more laid-back theatre experience with freedom to move around and make noise, including those with Autistic Spectrum conditions, sensory and communication disorders, learning disabilities and dementia.

Changes made include slight alterations to sound and lighting, additional staff members on hand to support, and a “chill-out zone” where people can go if they feel they need to take a break from the show.

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of volunteers from Earlsdon WI last Christmas, audiences at the relaxed performance of Cinderella were able to take advantage of hand-knitted “twiddle muffs”. Made with sensory attachments such as bobbles and buttons, these soft, therapeutic aids can help to minimise anxiety and/or provide stimulation for restless hands.

This year, the Belgrade is opening up the call to any enthusiastic knitters in the region interested in helping those with complex needs to enjoy the magic of panto this Christmas. Those who express an interest in taking part will be sent guidelines to follow, as well as an invitation to a festive “knit-in” with other volunteers.

For more information about how to get involved, please email srehman@belgrade.co.uk, or call 024 7684 6732.

When Princess Belle pricks her finger on an enchanted spinning wheel, she’s cursed to fall asleep for 100 years, unless she’s kissed by her one true love. Enter the dashing Prince Valiant, along with Nanny McWheeze and Muddles, who embark on a brave adventure to save the Princess from her terrible fate. But with the wicked Fairy Carabosse determined to ruin their plans, will the trusty trio be triumphant or is the Princess doomed to a century of snoozing?

Don’t be a knit-wit! Make sure you set your alarm and don’t get caught napping when the nation’s dreamiest pantomime comes to the Belgrade Theatre from Wednesday 21 November until Saturday 5 January, with the relaxed performance taking place on Thursday 3 January. Tickets are available to book now.
