Sleeping Beauty

Did you know...you can give a family the gift of theatre this Christmas?

Posted on 30 November 2012

A visit to the theatre is a fantastic experience for a young child. It sparks their imagination and curiosity. It can give them a voice. Theatre can improve their knowledge and language skills, which benefits them at school. And of course theatre entertains and engages young people.

A child’s first experience of theatre is usually a Pantomime. This year we will see nearly 9,000 young people attend Sleeping Beauty with their schools and thousands more attend with their families. This Christmas tradition is an excellent way for young people to experience live theatre for the first time and often unites a family in celebrating the festive season.

Unfortunately many families across Coventry and Warwickshire won’t be able to give their children this experience. As belts tighten, what for some was once seen as an essential part of every Christmas is now a luxury that they simply can’t afford.

To help with this, the Belgrade Theatre is working with Coventry Central Food Bank to give families facing financial hardship this Christmas tickets to see the Pantomime. Businesses who are members of the Belgrade’s Directors’ Club have generously donated tickets to enable 140 people to come to the Theatre this year, a terrific achievement. We are extremely grateful to these businesses.

However, those beneficiaries are just the tip of the iceberg, and we want to be able to brighten up the lives of more families, not just at Christmas, but throughout the year by giving them a break from the struggle that they have found themselves facing, and by offering them the chance to come and see Pantomime and other family shows at the Belgrade.

We are asking our audiences and supporters to consider making a donation which will allow us to offer tickets to families for both Pantomime and other family shows and make a difference to these people’s lives.

A donation of just £11 would buy a child’s ticket to see Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom, £18 would offer a family of four the chance to see The Night Queen and £33 would offer a family the chance to see this year’s Sleeping Beauty. *

You can donate at www.localgiving.com/charity/belgradetheatre. The first £10 that you donate will be matched by Local Giving, and will be further matched by a Government fund called Catalyst, meaning your support will go even further and help even more families facing hardship.

Thank you

*please note that these are indicative costs and the donations will be pooled for use on various family performances.
