2 Tone Captured In New Photography Exhibition at the Belgrade

Posted on 27 August 2014

The legendary days of 2 Tone are to be celebrated at Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre this October in a new exhibition of photographs by Brighton photographer Toni Tye, 2 Tone Captured.

The exclusive exhibition will run alongside Bob Eaton’s 2 Tone musical, Three Minute Heroes playing on the Belgrade’s B2 stage for three weeks from Sat 4 – Sat 25 October.

Capturing the energy and vibrancy of the 70s’ ska revival, 2 Tone Captured offers a unique celebration of the styles, fashions and bands synonymous with this iconic label including Madness, The Selecter, Bad Manners and The Bodysnatchers as well as their fans.

Toni lived in The Midlands in the ‘80s and ‘90s before moving to Brighton. In 1980, Toni was invited by the director, Joe Massot to shoot stills on tour for the 2 Tone film ‘Dance Craze’, and was given an ‘access all areas’’ pass to the legendary gigs. Sadly all of the negatives and colour transparencies Toni took whilst on tour for the 2 Tone film Dance Craze were lost by the publishers of a fanzine who printed them as the film premiered. Only 33 black and white prints and some rough contact sheets survived.

In 2005 Toni met Pauline Black from The Selecter, Rhoda Dakar from Bodysnatchers and Roddy Radiation from The Specials when they visited Brighton on a 25 year anniversary tour: 3 Men + Black. Months of hard work, digitally scanning, upgrading, and retouching her 25 year old black and white hand processed originals mean that these images are now available for all to view.

2 Tone Captured runs at the Belgrade Theatre until Sat 25 October. Entry to the exhibition is free.

Telling the story of 2 Tone through the lives of five Coventry teenagers and the social and racial tensions that engulfed the city at the time, Three Minute Heroes is a funny, feel-good and, at times, thought-provoking tribute to the city that inspired a musical revolution.

Three Minute Heroes runs on the B2 stage from Sat 4 – Sat 25 October. Tickets are available via the Belgrade Theatre Box Office on 024 7655 3055 or online at www.belgrade.co.uk where tickets are cheaper.
