Urban Octopus - Terry's Adventures in Coventry

Posted on 31 January 2019

It’s been a busy week for Terry the octopus here at the Belgrade, as rehearsals step up in the final week before Octopus Soup! opens on our B2 Stage.

In between teching the show, however, Coventry’s most famous cephalopod flâneur has found time to do a bit of exploring in the city centre, as well as soaking up attention from the press!

On Monday, the meandering mollusc made his way to the local swimming baths, to check out what leisure facilities the City of Sport 2019 had to offer – and he wasn’t disappointed.

The looming Octopus Soup! press night proved great for Monday motivation. Keen to look his best, Terry hopped on a hydrobike for a quick morning workout.

But of course, exercising should be fun, and Terry’s as much a sucker for a waterslide as anyone.

On Tuesday, a more studiously minded Terry took himself over to Waterstones to pick up some rehearsal-break reading. Of course he couldn’t resist a look at Peter Godfrey-Smith’s Other Minds: The Octopus and the Evolution of Intelligent Life.

“Cephalopods are an island of mental complexity in the sea of invertebrate animals. Because our most recent common ancestor was so simple and lies so far back, cephalopods are an independent experiment in the evolution of large brains and complex behavior. If we can make contact with cephalopods as sentient beings, it is not because of a shared history, not because of kinship, but because evolution built minds twice over,” says Peter.

Turns out Terry’s not the only octopus clever enough to be seen hanging about in book shops – check out his new best pals!

On Wednesday, Terry wandered over to the BBC Coventry and Warwickshire studio, where he was introduced to Mid-Morning favourite Vic Minett along with co-star Nick Hancock.

Vic loved meeting them so much, she even sent them home with a present! Look out for a BBC microphone appearing in the show…

Finally, BBC Midlands Today’s Satnam Rana popped by to get a sneak peak at rehearsals ahead of the Evening News.
