It’s A Beauty! Record Crowds Gather for Young Panto Chorus Auditions
Over 200 young performers from across Coventry and Warwickshire flocked to the Belgrade Theatre on Sunday 6th September for the chance to land a coveted role in this year’s pantomime chorus.
The annual auditions, which are open to ages 9-16, saw a record-breaking number of local youngsters from across Coventry and Warwickshire queue from as early as 9am to be in with a chance of starring in this year’s pantomime, Beauty and the Beast running on the Belgrade Main Stage from Wed 25 Nov 2015 – Sat 9 Jan 2016.
Charged with the daunting task of whittling the 219 hopefuls to just 24 children was Writer/Director Iain Lauchlan, who will once again be reprising his role as Dame in this year’s festive production. Iain, who has also written and directed this year’s show, is perhaps best known as the creator of the hit BBC children’s series The Tweenies which first aired in 1999. He will be joined on stage by partner-in-crime, Craig Hollingsworth.
This year’s auditions attracted young people from across the region with applicants travelling from Coventry, Bedworth, Nuneaton, Leamington Spa, Hinckley and Tamworth to participate.
On hand to offer their encouragement and expertise on the day were Free Radio Breakfast Presenters Roisin and Jenny who treated crowds to an impromptu rendition of ‘Something There’ in the afternoon before being told by Iain that the auditions were supposed to be for kids.
