Inspiring Curiosity - Highlights from the TiE 50th Anniversary Launch

Posted on 30 January 2015

This week saw the launch of Inspiring Curiosity at the Belgrade Theatre, a year-long celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the invention of Theatre In Education in Coventry.

On hand to launch the year-long programme of celebration was award-winning Theatre Director and former Artistic Director of the RSC, Sir Michael Boyd who joined TiE alumni, VIPs and educators from across the UK in B2 on Wed 28th January to take part in an afternoon of live performance, talks and debate celebrating 50 years of inspiring curiosity in young people through drama.

Also joining Michael on stage was special guest Gordon Vallins, one of four founder members of the original 1965 Belgrade TiE Company who treated audience members to a talk on the origins of TiE in 1965, a city-wide experiment set up in partnership with Coventry City Council that grew into an international movement.

The event, which also featured talks from Belgrade Associate Director Justine Themen and Councillor Faye Abbott (Cabinet Member for Community Development, Co-operative and Social Enterprise), marks the beginning of a year-long programme of work showcasing the richness and diversity of theatre made by, with or for young people in this country.

Throughout the afternoon, there was also the opportunity to enjoy a preview of selected works by the Belgrade’s own community groups which are currently being developed as part of In Our Own Words: Festival of Theatre by Young People, for Young People. This was followed by a scratch sharing of further works which took place in the evening, giving participants the chance to preview and critique each others work as it comes together.
