Joanna Reid, Denise Duncombe and Hamish Glen

Goodbye and Good Luck!

Posted on 1 February 2018

Yesterday was a day of sadness and celebration at the Belgrade Theatre as we waved goodbye to one of our longest-serving staff members, Denise Duncombe, who is retiring after 19 years.

Acting as Admin Manager and PA to our Artistic Director Hamish Glen, Denise played an integral role in the day-to-day running of the theatre and the organisation as a whole. As well as being heavily relied upon by all members of staff, she was a key contact for all who passed through the theatre, including actors, directors, touring companies and more.

Having started work at the Belgrade under the leadership of former Artistic Director Bob Eaton in 1999, she was a huge support to Hamish when he succeeded to the role in 2003, helping to steer him through some massive changes to the theatre such as the Capital Project, a large-scale redevelopment which included the building of our B2 auditorium.

At her retirement party, she kept us entertained with stories from throughout her time here, reminiscing about memorable past productions like Return to the Forbidden Planet and The Turn of the Screw, as well as several notable performers whom she had met over the years.

Hamish Glen said: “Today I said goodbye to Denise who has been a pillar of support over 15 years as well as a good friend. I hope she will enjoy her very well deserved retirement.”

Hers will be big shoes to fill, particularly as we enter a busy 60th anniversary year and with Coventry’s City of Culture year now on the horizon. She will be missed by everyone here, but we wish her a very happy and relaxed retirement and all the best in any future endeavours.
