Early-career artists sought for Shoot Festival 2019

Posted on 10 December 2018

Calling all emerging artists! Following the success of previous outings, Shoot Festival is returning to Coventry for 2019 and is now on the look-out for early-career makers and performers to showcase their work at the event.

Supported by the Belgrade Theatre’s Springboard talent development project, Shoot Festival is a biennial event, set up by Jennifer Davis and Paul O’Donnell to provide a platform for local artists to develop and perform new work in front of an audience.

Applications are now open to any dancers, poets, actors, musicians and other performance artists based in Coventry and Warwickshire (with a CV postcode). Participating artists and companies will receive a £100 fee, and will also be in with a chance of winning an Artist Development Award worth £1000 (made up of £500 cash and £500 worth of mentorship), judged by a panel of professional artists based in the area.

Taking place 4-7 April 2019, the next Shoot Festival will be held in various venues around Coventry including the Belgrade Theatre, The Tin, Shop Front Theatre and outdoors in the city centre’s Bull Yard.

Richard Walls, who won the Artist Development Award in 2014 and has received ongoing support from the festival, said, “ Shoot Festival expanded the possibilities for me as an artist and it continues to do so. I urge anyone with even the seed of an idea to apply.”

As well as giving artist a chance to get paid, gather feedback and receive ongoing mentoring and support, Shoot Festival is also a great networking opportunity, offering a fertile ground for sowing the seeds of future collaborations.

Chris O’Connell, Artistic Director of Theatre Absolute, said, “Performing at the first Shoot Festival were two break dancers we’d probably never have met – Marius and Andrei. Immediately we knew we wanted to work with them so we applied to ACE for funds and in 2016, we made Traum.”

Shoot Festival Directors Jennifer Davis and Paul O’Donnell said, “Since our first event in 2014, Shoot has developed so much. It’s now an established event in Coventry’s cultural calendar and plans are well underway for next year. We’re going to be supporting more artists than ever before.”

Shoot Festival runs in various Coventry venues 4-7 April 2019.* The deadline for applications is 5pm on Thursday 20 December 2018.* Visit the Shoot Festival website to apply or find out more.
