At the Belgrade Theatre, we aim to be one of the most dynamic producing theatres in the country and to offer an exciting mix of entertaining and engaging live experiences all under one roof.
The work that the Belgrade produces itself is unique to Coventry. After much consideration and consultation, our Artistic Director, Hamish Glen, chose a European repertoire of work to reflect Coventry’s internationalism and its unique position as the city of Peace and Reconciliation.
Hamish Glen said: “Although the economic climate could lead theatres to programme less risky choices, we intend to remain true to our vision as best we can by continuing to provide a varied and life enhancing programme of artistic work.”
Since first opening in 1958, the Belgrade has played an important role in developing creative professionals. Well known stage and screen actors like_ Richard Briers, Sir Ian McKellen, David Suchet, Rosemary Leach_ and Clive Owen and Directors such as Sir Trevor Nunn, all started their careers at the Belgrade and were heavily influenced by its avant-garde approach to theatre in Britain. In the 60s and 70s, Coventry was the place to be if you were an aspiring young actor. The work that we produce today is once again challenging the boundaries of British theatre and the actors that we are working with today will be the UK’s much loved and respected performers in 20 years time. We are heavily investing in the future of British arts.
So with that in mind we are delighted that Michael Billington, chief theatre critic at the Guardian, gave our current production of The Father a four star review and gives praise to two of the main performers, Joe Dixon and Katy Stephens saying “It’s a piece that demands two big performances, which it certainly gets here.”
This new version of The Father was written by Laurie Slade, who, together with director Joe Harmston, approached the Belgrade in response to Hamish Glen’s avowed desire for the Belgrade to become the recognised home for striking new versions of European classic drama. As Joe Harmston said, “The Belgrade is the perfect first home for this ambitious project and we hope to continue the impressive recent history of Scenes from a Marriage, The House of Bernarda Alba, Uncle Vanya, and Nora.”
