Did you know... the Belgrade Theatre not only stages touring shows but makes its own shows too?
Since reopening in September 2007 the Belgrade Theatre has re-established itself as one of the best producing houses in the UK. Our Artistic Director, Hamish Glen, has chosen to produce a European repertoire of work to reflect Coventry’s internationalism and its unique position as the city of Peace and Reconciliation in order to remain at the forefront of UK theatre.
Hamish Glen said: “Although the economic climate could lead theatres to programme less risky choices, we intend to remain true to our vision as best we can by continuing to provide a varied and life enhancing programme of artistic work.”
Over the last 5 years the Belgrade have produced a number of challenging, lesser known works that are not staged elsewhere, alongside a strand of productions that bring to life the history of Coventry. The Belgrade have produced over 30 of its own shows since 2007 including; Mr. Puntila and his Man, Scenes from a Marriage, One Night in November, The Beggar’s Opera, The Father and We Love You City.
In addition to this the Belgrade Community & Education Company have also produced a huge number of its own shows, working with young people from across the City to provide them the opportunity to develop skills and give a voice to their experiences.
As part of the 5th Anniversary celebrations, there will be an exhibition of production photographs from the Belgrade produced shows, which will act as a photographic timeline of the Belgrade’s successes.
The free exhibition will be displayed on the Burbidge Gallery between Saturday 8 – Friday 21 September during Theatre opening hours.
