Did you know... the Belgrade Theatre is looking to the skies to help its fundraising drive?

Posted on 9 July 2012

This Sunday (15 July) it is St Swithin’s Day, the day of the year on which the next 40 days weather is decided…if the legend be believed.

St Swithin was the Bishop of Winchester. On his deathbed, he asked to be buried in a humble grave outside the north wall of his cathedral so that the “sweet rain from heaven” could fall on his grave. But the monks felt it wasn’t a fitting resting place. So on July 15, 971, they decided to move his grave to an ornate shrine they built for him. Legend has it that torrential rains poured down on that day and every one after for the following 40 days and 40 nights. Believing that it was St Swithin showing his displeasure by weeping in despair, the monks decided against moving his remains. Hence the rhyme:

St Swithin’s day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St Swithun’s day if thou be fair
For forty days ‘twill rain na mair

St Swithin is not the only one looking to the skies; the Belgrade Theatre has teamed up with the Weather Lottery to help its fundraising drive. The Weather Lottery offers the chance to win up to £25,000 if the numbers chosen coincide with the temperature of six European destinations. Entry to the Weather Lottery costs as little as £1 a week and money raised from the Weather Lottery will be used to develop the Belgrade Theatre’s work in the community.
