Highlights from this year's Belgrade Mela!
Last Saturday the Belgrade came alive with the sights, smells and tastes of South East Asia. With a variety of stalls of arts and crafts and local businesses, including henna and nail artists, the Coventry Belgrade Mela was a fun mix of events, information and food. One the first floor there was a soft play children’s zone which was very popular with youngsters (and parents), and there was plenty of music from our DJ to keep everyone in the party spirit.
Samosas, balloons, beats & banghra! The party continues all day

The dance and music classes in our B2 Theatre went down a storm, with some help and participation from our youth theatre. I saw some of our Belgrade regulars strutting their stuff and getting into the dancing, and I myself got persuaded into joining the dance mob behind BBC Coventry and Warwickshire’s Trish Adudu who was here reporting on the event.

Trish was given a one-on-one dance class with our dance teacher Sneha Singh, who taught her how to thumka (a type of hip-drop) and Trish managed to hold her own shaking her stuff, and persuading everyone to join in later.

In amongst all this high energy, there was also a yoga workshop, and a talk about getting South Asian Youth into higher education.
We’re just getting warmed up. Workshop number 1 – a traditional yoga work-out with Daljit.

Some more impromptu dance with the Belgrade Asian Youth Theatre, several toddlers, Sneha and a very accommodating dhol player in front of the Belgrade meant that we also managed to burn off a few of the calories from the samosas we consumed! With Sneha adept at getting everyone on their feet, we had stallholders joining in with the dance and getting into the spirit of things. This buzz really set the scene for the evening event with Sukhshinder Shinda performing some of his best-loved hits, and was a packed, fun and festive day which really displayed a great deal of South Asian Culture.
