Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2014

Posted on 6 March 2014

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2014, we interviewed three of our current apprentices at the Belgrade, Caitlin McCormack – Marketing Apprentice, Shannon Burns – Community Arts Apprentice and Laura Anderson – Operations Apprentice. Watch the video below to find out more about their experience of being an apprentice in the theatre.

Launched in 2011, the Belgrade Theatre has been recognised by the National Skills Academy for its thriving, award-winning Creative Apprenticeship Scheme. The theatre offers year long placements for apprentices working in various departments of the theatre including, Communications, Warwrobe, Sound, Lighting, Community & Education and Operations. Whilst gaining experience of working in a theatre environment, they work in conjunction with Stratford-upon-Avon College, Warwickshire College or Heart of England Training to receive a BTEC qualification.

Claire Simpson, General Manger of the Belgrade’s Community & Education department added, “Apprenticeships are incredibly important within the creative sector. It can be a notoriously hard profession to break into but it really is one that is best learnt on the job. The value of the young people participating in the scheme are of benefit for both the apprentice and theatre as a mix of voices and experiences ensure that apprentices are cherished as key members of the theatre’s team. We are very proud that our award-winning scheme opens up opportunities to working in the arts and that it has proved to be so successful.”
