Posted on 19 July 2012

With a cast of sixteen actors and musicians 20th Century Boy will see some of the best singers and dancers from London’s West End take to the Belgrade stage.

Leading them will be George Maguire, who will don the glitter and feather boa to play T. Rex front man Marc Bolan. George’s previous stage credits include Fame at the West End’s Shaftesbury Theatre, Bank at the King’s Head, Rent on European tour, Quadrophenia at the Nuffield Theatre and Oliver! at the London Palladium.

The role of Marc Bolan’s girlfriend Gloria will be played by Donna Hines, who recently starred in the UK tour of the West End Motown musical Dancing in the Streets and the Netherlands tour of the hit musical Hair. His son Rolan Bolan will be played by Craig Storrod and Matthew Ashcroft will play the roles of T. Rex band members Mickey Finn and Steve Took.

Tim Bonser will play Sean, a backstage roadie who helps Rolan discover more about his father. He will also lead the live band on guitar and vocals and appear on stage as Dave Vanian, front man of punk rock band The Damned. Alongside him will be Steve Simmonds, who will play T. Rex bass player Steve Currie and Captain Sensible. The role of T.Rex drummer Bill Legend is yet to be cast.

Other cast members include Sophia Ragavelas, who will play the roles of Helen Shapiro and Chelita Secunda, Derek Hagen, who will play Tony Visconti, Lucy Sinclair, who will play June, Anthony Topham, who will play Marc’s brother Harry Feld and Patricia Villa as his mother Phyllis.

The ensemble cast includes Matthew Jeans, Stephen Rolley, Naomi Slights and Yasmin Yazdi.

20th Century Boy will be directed by award-winning director and choreographer Gary Lloyd, who recently directed the hit West End Michael Jackson musical Thriller Live. He said:

20th Century Boy is a fast paced rock ‘n’ roll journey through Marc Bolan’s short yet eventful life. Told through the eyes of his son Rolan, we learn about the fame driven glam star, his untimely death and the complex relationships he left behind. It’s a fascinating story re-written especially for the Belgrade with a ’70s soundtrack that defies anyone to leave the theatre not humming along!

20th Century Boy will run on the Main Stage from Fri 14 to Sat 29 September. Packed full of all of T. Rex’s ’70s hits, it looks behind the glitter and the sequins to tell the extraordinary story of Marc Bolan’s life from the early age of nine, partly from the perspective of his son Rolan, as he seeks to find out more about his famous father who died when he was just two years old.
