Back On The Beat in Broadgate
Coventry shoppers were transported back in time this week with a surprise visit from one of Heartbeat’s best-loved regulars, a 1960s model Ford Anglia Police Car.
The vintage vehicle – which was a regular feature of the hit ITV police drama between 1992 – 2010 – enjoyed a stop off in Broadgate Square earlier this month in countdown to the UK premiere of the first ever stage production of Heartbeat which arrives at Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre from Mon 11 – Sat 16 April.
The 1959 model Ford Anglia 10SE has clocked up an impressive 2000 miles so far in its journey across the UK, travelling to cities as far afield as Birmingham, Eastbourne, Buxton and Glasgow to help spread the word about the show.
Accompanied by the Belgrade’s very own Emma Rowan (Communications Officer) and Sairah Rehman (Communications Assistant) – who were decked out in their best swinging sixties outfits – the car took to the streets on Thursday 17th March as part of a special one-off promotion for the show.
The much-loved police vehicle was acquired by the producers of the show during a research visit to the Yorkshire village of Goathland – the real-life inspiration for Aidensfield, the fictional village where Heartbeat is set.
Based on The Constable series of novels by Nicholas Rhea, Heartbeat ran for 18 years from 1992 to 2010 on ITV in its regular Sunday night slot with audiences regularly exceedingly 10 million viewers and the show was constantly in the top five TV programmes across all the channels.
Now it comes to the stage starring regulars David Lonsdale who played the loveable David Stockwell and Steven Blakely who played PC Geoff Younger. They are joined by a strong cast including Hollyoaks star, Matt Milburn playing handsome copper PC Joe Malton. Other favourite characters including Gina Ward and Bernie Scripps will also be making an appearance in this production which, with use of video footage and a brilliant set, authentically recreates the atmosphere of the 1960s rural Yorkshire.
Heartbeat plays on the Belgrade Theatre Main Stage from Mon 11 – Sat 16 April. For full tour information, visit www.heartbeatontour.com
