An American 'Cougar' in Coventry
Cougar fever arrived in Coventry last night as ‘ladies of a certain age’ (and brave men) from across the city descended on the Belgrade Theatre in their multitudes for the U.K premiere of Cougar – The Musical, a fun, sassy and thought-provoking musical comedy from the pen of American playwright Donna Moore.
The brand new Belgrade Theatre production marked its official opening in Coventry on Tues 19 May following smash-hit success in New York, where the musical ran for over two years off-broadway.
Bringing a slice of the ‘Big Apple’ to Coventry for the evening was American playwright and original creator of Cougar The Musical, Donna Moore who arrived complete with leopard-print figure-hugging dress after flying over to the UK to see the show from her base in New York.
After watching the evening performance, the self-confessed ‘Cougar expert’ joined U.K cast members Suanne Braun, Dawn Hope, Pippa Winslow and Barnaby Hughes on stage for photographs before staying on to meet U.K fans and get acquainted with some of Coventry’s ‘native’ Cougar population.
On the prowl for material for her latest stand-up show, Donna Moore first stumbled upon the idea for Cougar The Musical at a party. Keen to get her claws into the ‘Cougar phenomenon’, Donna wrote a song on the subject which she later developed into her one-woman show, The Cougar Cabaret. What began as a one-woman cabaret show quickly grew into a fully-fledged animal and an unexpected smash-hit with audiences.
During an interview after the show, Donna Moore said: ‘This is my first visit to the UK and it’s been amazing so far. I’ve just come back from Korea where Cougar The Musical has just completed 60 performances so it’s turning into quite the world tour! This show really has been my life’s mission and it’s incredible to see audiences worldwide connect with these characters in such a way. Each moment of the show was filled with real authenticity and, as a writer, that’s something you always strive for. Cougar is about spreading love and empowerment, not just between women but men too! I’ve had women coming up to me all evening asking me about the show and congratulating me. That’s what’s so wonderful about live theatre – it’s a collective experience anyone can share in regardless of which part of the world you come from’.
