East Asian Representation On Stage Panel Discussion B2 stage 0.00000000 0.00000000 Join us for a conversation about the representation of East Asian actors and artists on stage. Actors of East Asian descent have long been under-represented on British stages. This panel will look to discuss some of the reasons behind this, as well as what can be done to address it. Looking at yellowface, a lack of specifically East Asian roles, and a reluctance to cast East Asian performers in roles that are not specified as East Asian, this is a call out to the industry to challenge the mistakes of the past, and implement more inclusive practices. Panelists are currently being confirmed, so watch this space for our line-up. Ian McKellen on stage with Tolkien, Shakespeare, Others and You A message from Ian McKellen: I’m celebrating my 80th birthday by touring a new solo show to theatres I know well and a few that I don’t. The show starts with Gandalf and will probably end with an invitation to act with me on stage. In-between there will be anecdotes and acting. I open at my local arts centre in January and end up by August in Orkney. Live theatre has always been thrilling to me, as an actor and in the audience. Growing up in Lancashire, I was grateful to those companies who toured beyond London and I’ve always enjoyed repaying that debt by touring up and down the country myself, with the RSC, the National Theatre, Prospect Theatre, the Actors’ Company, as well as with commercial productions. My first professional job was at the newly-built Belgrade Theatre, living in a company flat on Corporation Street. I stayed a year, on £8.50 a week. “Ian McKellen On Stage” is anecdote as well as acting, so I’ll tell you a story or two about the old days. All profits will support talent development work at the Belgrade. See you there I hope! IAN McKELLEN ON STAGE is presented by Ambassador Theatre Group. Running time: approx. 2 hours

Custody #WhoisBrian Another young black man dies in police custody. Apparently no one is to blame. In 2017 how can this be so? *Custody*, created by Urbain Wolf (_Art Machine_) and written by Tom Wainwright (_Banksy: The Room in the Elephant_) is a contemporary fictional narrative about the moment another young black man’s life is taken from him whilst in custody. The play follows Brian’s bereaved family’s struggle for justice and resolution and asks, who will protect us for the protectors of society? Directed by Gbemi Ikumelo, *Custody* tackles a vital subject, in a vivid, timely and authentic way. Black deaths in police custody are often assumed to be an American issue. *Custody* reminds us that they are not. Inspired by Migrant Media’s banned cult documentary films _Injustice_ and _Who Polices the Police?_, *Custody* draws on the real life experiences of families who have suffered from police injustice and from police stop and searches experienced by creator Urbain Wolf himself. RESPECT to Aretha Life-long Aretha Franklin fan and power-house vocalist, Letitia George stars in this heartfelt and uplifting dedication to the Queen of Soul. Heart of Darkness B2 stage 0.00000000 0.00000000 Joseph Conrad's classic, Heart of Darkness, retold for today.

Heart of Darkness Following the popular and critically acclaimed adaptation of Hemingway’s _A Farewell to Arms_, imitating the dog turn their attention to Joseph Conrad’s extraordinarily influential novel, *Heart of Darkness*. Written more than 100 years ago, amid the optimism at the turn of a new century, it’s a tale of lies and brutal greed and of the dark heart which beats within us all. Now re-sited in a timeless Europe, in a forsaken landscape lost to the destructive lust for power, it emerges as a tale absolutely for our time. This bold re-telling of Conrad’s classic is a visually rich, multi-layered work which fuses live performance with digital technology. The performers enter the stage, into uncharted territory. They are adrift with a story that they know they must tell. As they wait for the turn of the tide, the story unfolds like an animated Cinemascope graphic novel on the hanging projections screens above their heads. Their story is Conrad’s story, of the voyage into the perilous unknown. And, as we continue the journey, it becomes our story, exposing the dehumanisation that paved the way for the horrors of the 20th Century, and countless horrors yet to come. The heart of darkness must be found. The story is impossible to tell, but it must be told. Contains strong language and scenes of graphic violence. The theme of this year’s summer school is Play in a Week, during these fun and practical workshops, your young people will produce a short piece of theatre that they create themselves using skills that they learn throughout the week. *Summer School* is led by our experienced DBS checked practitioners in the Belgrade’s safe and professional theatre. No previous drama experience is necessary to take part. Just bring comfortable clothing and footwear, and lots of enthusiasm! Lunch is not provided, so please bring a packed lunch with you or some money to get something from our Café. There will be a designated lunch area for participants to use, which will be supervised at all times. We also recommend bringing plenty of water to drink throughout the day. *Summer School* takes place from *Mon 29 July to Fri 2 Aug* from 10am – 4.30pm at the Belgrade Theatre. At 4pm on the final day we’ll share what we’ve been working on with family and friends. Participants are welcome join the 8-11 group while they are at primary school, including when they’re in Year 6. If a young person is in Year 7 and above, they can join the 11-16 group.
