Coventry Belgrade Mela 2018
Day Mela: 12noon – 5pm

Coventry Belgrade Mela is now in its fourth year and continues to offer a wide range of amazing South Asian events. From the ever popular workshops, where you can learn some hip movements to the sounds of Bollywood, to viewing an exhibition of South Asian women and learning what voting means to them, to the activity-packed children’s zone.

You’ll also be able to wander through the Belgrade’s foyers and browse various stalls selling beautiful jewellery and crafts, and enjoy some wonderful, desi food.

These will take place in the first-floor Burbidge Room. Check back for details nearer the time.

The main foyer will feature stalls offering jewellery, beauty products and information.

From 1 July, the first-floor Burbidge Gallery will play host to an original exhibition, curated by the Creative Producer of the Belgrade Mela, Nasreen Akhtar Khan. The exhibition will feature several women’s accounts of what it means to be able to vote, coming from a South Asian background, and the value and importance of the vote in today’s societies.

Situated on the first-floor Burbidge Gallery, the Children’s Zone features a wide range of activities which include learning how to write your own language, learning the art of Calligraphy and face painting plus other activities to keep the “Bachaa” (children) entertained!

The ground floor Belgrade Café will be offering a desi twist on Afternoon tea… Please check back for more details nearer the time.

The Evening Mela is a ticketed event which showcases local artists and also aims to provide a platform for emerging artists.

This year all performances have been created exclusively for the Coventry Belgrade Mela with performances by several artists and groups, including a Sri Devi tribute performance, a fusion of live traditional instruments, spoken word about Colonial Hangover, a dance piece of Bhangra and street dance merging together, poetry sessions, comedy and acting. The Evening Mela will be a celebration of everything that Coventry’s South Asian arts and culture has to offer.
